Dental Implants Melbourne
Improve Appearance & Function
Dental implants are the are the gold standard to replace missing teeth.
They also provide a great alternative to dentures, which most people find annoying.
Dental implants and implant crowns are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a patient’s smile!
Dental implants are very strong, stable, and durable and will last many years.
Missing teeth cause gaps in your smile and can lead to a misaligned bite and teeth, as teeth can move to fill the gap.
Other problems can include infected gums, periodontitis and further loss of teeth. Receding jawbone and gums causing premature ageing of your appearance can also occur.
What Are Dental Implants?
If you consider a tooth to have 2 parts- a root that sits under the gums and into the bone and a crown which sits above the gum and is the portion of tooth you see when you smile.
A dental implant is a medical grade titanium screw that takes the place of the root of the tooth.
An implant crown, which is a porcelain crown and something called an abutment (which connects the crown to the implant) sits above the gums takes the places of your natural crown.
The dental implant and the implant crown will look and feel very much like your natural tooth.
Reasons for dental implants:
- Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.
- Correcting or improving problems caused by missing teeth or teeth drifting gaps from missing teeth.
- Restore a patient’s confident smile.
- Restore chewing, speech, and digestion.
- Restore or enhance facial tissues.
- Support a bridge or denture, making it more secure and comfortable.
What does getting dental implants involve?
The process of getting implants requires a number of visits over several months.
3D X-rays and scans are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine the amount of available bone, how the gums are positioned and the amount of available space there is for the implant to be placed and if a tooth (crown) can be positioned correctly to restore function.
Once it is determined that you are a good candidate for an implant the surgical appointment will entail anaesthetizing the area, preparing the gums and bone to allow for the implant to be surgically placed into the bone.
Once accomplished the implant will be given 3-6 months to heal and allow for adequate bone growth onto the implant and appropriate gum formation above the implant.
After all the healing has taken place and has been confirmed and impression of the implant it taken to allow for the implant crown to be custom fabricated.
Once the implant crown is ready, the implant crown is attached to the implant via a titanium screw.
After which, you are ready to enjoy the benefits of having your tooth replaced.
You will receive care instructions when your treatment is completed. Good oral hygiene and eating habits, alongside regular dental visits, will aid in the life of your new implant.
Dental implants can also be used when multiple or all teeth are missing. Bridges and dentures can both be connected to dental implants.
